SAS Visual Analytics 7.5 might take longer than expected to calculate the cardinality of the category data items on the Data pane. The impact on performance is more obvious for data sources that have high-cardinality categories.

This issue occurs for a couple of reasons:

• Starting with release 7.5, cardinality is calculated for all of the categories on the Data pane. In earlier releases, cardinality is calculated for only visible categories.
• Release 7.5 does not limit the count to 5,000, which is the limit in earlier releases. For example, suppose that a category has 12,000 unique values. In release 7.5, the Data pane shows that the cardinality is 12K. In release 7.4, the cardinality for the same category would show 5,000+. 

This change is by design in release 7.5. If performance is a concern, you can turn off the feature that retrieves cardinality values for the Data pane. Click the icon for your user ID in the upper right corner of the window. Under SAS Visual Analytics ► General, select the Bypass retrieving cardinality values for the Data pane option.

 

Click the Hot Fix tab in this note to access the hot fix for this issue. After you apply the hot fix, you can set a new property that enables you to specify a limit on the cardinality shown on the Data pane.

1. In SAS® Management Console, select Application Management ► Configuration Manager ► SAS Application Infrastructure.
2. Expand Visual Analytics ► Visual Analytics Services.
3. Right-click Visual Analytics Transport Service, and select Properties.
4. In the Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
5. Click Add to open the Define New Property dialog box.
   1. For the Property Name, enter va.DistinctCountDataPanelLimit
   2. For the Property Value, enter a value to use for the limit. For example, if you enter 1000, then the Data pane does not show the cardinality for data items with 1,000 or more unique values.
6. Click OK twice to exit both dialog boxes and save the changes.
7. Restart your web application server to enforce the new setting.
