Problem Note 64209: Elasticsearch clustering in SASĀ® Visual Investigator fails when the master node fails, and you see the message "fatal error on the network layer"
When you use Elasticsearch clustering in SAS Visual Investigator, you might encounter a failure of the Elasticsearch master node with the following error messages: "fatal error on the network layer" and "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Direct buffer memory."
The out-of-memory error occurs due to the use of the -XX:+DisableExplicitGC Java Virtual Machine (JVM) option. This option was a default JVM option in Elasticsearch, but it was removed in Elasticsearch versions 5.5.1 and 5.6.0 onward.
The workaround is to manually remove the setting by modifying the jvm.options file within /opt/sas/viya/config/etc/elasticsearch/default/. You will need to restart the service after this change.
