When CLASSPATH contains national character, SAS generates an error when you declare a Java Object.  The following replication uses a Japanese environment, as an example.

1. Create a folder including Japanese characters. Here is an example:

 c:\temp\テスト

2. Download example from SAS Note 34616.
3. Put samples.jar to the folder c:\temp\テスト.
4. Start SAS English with DBCS (double-byte character set) session or a SAS Japanese session using a customized sasv9.cfg file, which contains the Japanese CLASSPATH C:\temp\テスト.
5. Check CLASSPATH:

6. Run the sample code from SAS Note 34616.
7. The error occurs:

ERROR: Could not initialize classpath.
NOTE: The DATA step has been abnormally terminated.

To avoid this problem, do not use national characters.
