Problem Note 60156: PROC HPFOREST does not use the SEED= option when selecting candidate splitting-variables in each node
In SAS® High-Performance Data Mining, the HPFOREST procedure supports a SEED= option in the PROC HPFOREST statement. "SAS Enterprise Miner ... High-Performance Procedures" contains the following information:
SEED=n
specifies the seed for generating random numbers. The HPFOREST procedure uses random numbers to select training observations for each tree and to select candidate variables in each node to split on. n is a nonnegative integer. Set n to 0 to use the internal default. The default value of the seed is 8,976,153.
However, PROC HPFOREST does not use the SEED= option " ... to select candidate variables in each node to split on". Instead, the procedure uses a fast-random-number generator for selecting candidate variables. The generator uses the tree ID and the node ID to form a seed, and that use is designed to ensure diversity of sets of candidates across trees.
