When you submit APPEND procedure code to update an NVARCHAR or NCHAR field, the following error might occur:

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

• You are running a Unicode SAS^® session (UTF-8 encoding).
• You assign the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) library to a Microsoft SQL Server using the SQL Server Native Client 11.0 or the SQL Server ODBC driver.
• The NVARCHAR or NCHAR fields that you are updating has a length greater than 1333 characters.

There are two possible workarounds for this issue:

• Limit the length of the NVARCHAR or NCHAR fields to less than 1333 characters.
• Redefine the NVARCHAR or NCHAR fields from within the database to NVARCHAR(MAX) or NCHAR(MAX), respectively.
