Problem Note 59441: A Java proxy error might occur in the SAS® log when you start Base SAS® after a new installation of SAS® 9.4
In some cases, you might see a Java-related error in your SAS log at start-up right after you install SAS 9.4. An example of this error is shown below.
ERROR: The Java proxy is not responding.
ERROR: The Java proxy's JNI call to start the VM failed.
ERROR: Unable to load the Java Virtual Machine. Please see the installation instructions or system administrator.
This Java error is sometimes caused by a problem with the JREOPTIONS system option in the sasv9.cfg configuration file or by an incorrect file path for the Dsas.jre.libjvm path in the sasv9.cfg configuration file. In order to correct this, please complete both workarounds below.
Workaround #1
- Check the -Dsas.jre.libjvm path to make sure it is correct. Here is an example of an incorrect path:
Below is an example of a corrected -Dsas.jre.libjvm path. Note that your file path might differ based on your installation.
- Right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
- Select File ► Open.
- Navigate to your sasv9.cfg configuration file. Use the appropriate path for your SAS installation, as listed below.
- For 64-bit SAS: C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.4\nls\en
- For 32-bit SAS: C:\Program Files\SASHome\x86\SASFoundation\9.4\nls\en
- In the file, locate the section that begins with JREOPTIONS.
- Locate the line that begins with -Dsas.jre.libjvm=.
- Check to make sure this file path is correct by navigating to the location listed and checking to see whether the file exists in that location. If it is incorrect, replace the file path with the correct path.
- Once all corrections have been made, select File ► Save and close Notepad.
- Open Base SAS 9.4 and check the log for any Java errors.
An example of an incorrect JREOPTIONS in the sasv9.cfg file is shown below.
Workaround #2
To manually repair your JREOPTIONS within the sasv9.cfg configuration file, follow these steps to correct your SAS 9.4 configuration file.
- Right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.
- Select File ► Open.
- Navigate to your sasv9.cfg configuration file. Use the appropriate path for your SAS installation, as listed below.
- For 64-bit SAS: C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.4\nls\en
- For 32-bit SAS: C:\Program Files\SASHome\x86\SASFoundation\9.4\nls\en
- In the file, locate the section that begins with JREOPTIONS. This section includes duplicated lines as well as incomplete lines. To correct this, delete the duplicate lines and correct the incomplete lines. Examples of both, the incorrect and corrected versions, are shown below.
- Once all corrections have been made, select File ► Save and close Notepad.
- Open SAS 9.4 (English) and check the log for any Java errors.
