Problem Note 59234: When you use PROC APPEND to update a Microsoft SQL Server NVARCHAR or NCHAR field, "ERROR: Error binding parameters...invalid precision value" occurs
When you submit APPEND procedure code to update an NVARCHAR or NCHAR field, the following error might occur:
ERROR: Error binding parameters: [Microsoft][XXX]Invalid precision value
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You are running a Unicode SAS® session (UTF-8 encoding).
- You assign the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) library to a Microsoft SQL Server using the SQL Server Native Client 11.0 or the SQL Server ODBC driver.
- The NVARCHAR or NCHAR fields that you are updating has a length greater than 1333 characters.
There are two possible workarounds for this issue:
- Limit the length of the NVARCHAR or NCHAR fields to less than 1333 characters.
- Redefine the NVARCHAR or NCHAR fields from within the database to NVARCHAR(MAX) or NCHAR(MAX), respectively.
