Usage Note 58409: SAS support for IBM z Systems Data Compression (zEDC)
To take advantage of the IBM z Systems Data Compression (zEDC) feature, you can use the SMS DATACLAS option COMPACTION=YES to request compression for a z/OS data set in which a SAS library resides. However, SAS support for compression depends on which type of library you are using. Here are the details:
- SAS can process sequential access bound libraries (RECFM=U), even if the library resides in a compressed data set. Sequential access bound libraries are created using a sequential engine such as TAPE, V9SEQ, V6SEQ, V5SEQ, and so on. These libraries might reside on tape or on disk.
- SAS cannot process direct access bound libraries (RECFM=FS) if the library resides in a compressed data set. Direct access bound libraries are created using a form of the BASE engine such as BASE, V9, V6, and so on.
