Problem Note 57023: Statement-style comments can cause syntax errors in PROC FORMAT
A syntax error might be generated if you use the statement style syntax for comments in PROC FORMAT. The example SAS® log below illustrates this problem.

NOTE: The previous statement has been deleted.

The comment begins with an asterisk, causing PROC FORMAT to generate the error.
To correct the problem, use PL/I style comments. An example of this type of comment is:

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
If the comment is omitted or made a PL/I style comment, then the syntax error does not occur.
