Problem Note 56982: PROC FCMP step fails with "ERROR: Assignment of incompatible types. Cannot take address of returned value for assignment to pointer type."

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

When you run a PROC FCMP step that contains an expression with each of the following:

  • a call to an FCMP-defined function, and
  • an embedded function call as an argument to the FCMP-defined function
the FCMP step might fail with the following parsing error in the SAS log:
ERROR: Assignment of incompatible types. Cannot take address of returned value
for assignment to pointer type.
For example, the problem occurs in the following expression if the function FOO is defined in FCMP and the function BAR is defined in PROTO:
a = foo({1,2,3,4,5,6}, {1,2,3,4,5,6}, 15) + foo({1,2,3,4,5,6}, {1,2,3,4,5,6}, bar(b));
The problem occurs due to overly restrictive parsing that requires the return type to match for each function in the expression.
