Usage Note 56002: Collecting diagnostic output from SAS® Enterprise Miner(tm) Client or SAS Enterprise Miner Workstation with em_console
When diagnosing issues with SAS Enterprise Miner Client or SAS Enterprise Miner Workstation, it might be necessary to collect diagnostic output using em_console. This note tells how to launch SAS Enterprise Miner using em_console and how to collect the em_console output. In addition, details about how to enable advanced diagnostics within the em_console output are provided.
Launching em_console and collecting diagnostic output
- On the machine where you launch SAS Enterprise Miner Client or SAS Enterprise Miner Workstation, navigate to the following location on the filesystem:
<SASHome>\SASEnterpriseMiner*\<version>\
<SASHome>
is the location of your SASHome folder (example: C:\Program Files\SASHome).
SASEnterpriseMiner*
is either SASEnterpriseMinerWorkstationConfiguration
or SASEnterpriseMinerClient
, depending on which application you are using.
<version>
is the version of the application that you are using (example: 7.1
, 12.1
, 12.3
, 13.1
, 13.2
, and so on).
-
Within this folder, double-click em_console. A Command Prompt window should be displayed and SAS Enterprise Miner should launch.
-
After SAS Enterprise Miner has been launched using this method, re-create the issue, error, or behavior of concern within SAS Enterprise Miner. Observe the diagnostic output that is written to the Command Prompt window. If you are working with SAS Technical Support, collect this output using one of the three methods discussed below and submit the output for review.
- Capture the complete output with a series of screenshots.
- Capture the complete output using Copy / Paste. Note that there is an Edit menu with Select All and Copy available by clicking the top left corner of the Command Prompt window.
- Collect the em_console*.log file that contains the same output from the following default location:
<Users>\<username>\AppData\Local\SAS\SASDeploymentWizard\
<Users>
is the Users directory for the Windows operating system (example: C:\Users
).
<username>
is the name of the user that was logged on to the Windows machine when SAS Enterprise Miner was launched.
Be sure to check the date and time stamp on the file and within the filename itself to ensure that the correct file is selected. Also, note that the AppData
folder is a hidden folder.
Enable advanced diagnostic output
In many cases the default diagnostic output that is generated by em_console is sufficient. However, in some cases, SAS Technical Support might require advanced diagnostic-output. Complete the following steps to enable advanced diagnostic-output within em_console:
-
Download the attached
log4j.zip
file. Extract the log4j.properties
file that is contained within it. Extract the file to the folder that is identified in step 1 of the section above. If a log4j.properties
file already exists in this folder, then rename the existing copy to log4j.properties.original
before extracting the new copy to this folder.
-
Locate the
em.ini
file that is in the same folder as the log4j.properties
file. Using a text editor, open the em.ini
file. Specify em.log
as the value for the parameter named applogloc
, and save the changes. Example: applogloc=em.log
-
Launch SAS Enterprise Miner using em_console, as described in the section above, and re-create the issue, error, or behavior of concern. Observe the advanced diagnostic-output that is written to the Command Prompt window. Submit the following to SAS Technical Support for review and analysis:
- the
em_console*.log
file, as described in step 3c in the section above
- the
em.log
file that is created at the location identified in step 1 of the section above
