Usage Note 55652: "Error: The ODS initializer failed to instantiate during SAS startup" might be issued when you invoke SAS®
The following error messages might be written to the SAS log when you invoke SAS:
Error: The ODS initializer failed to instantiate during SAS startup.
Error: Exception text: assistive technology not found: com.sun.java.accessibility.accessbridge.
To correct the problem, follow these steps:
- Close all SAS sessions that might be running.
- If you are using SAS in a 32-bit Windows operating environment, check to see which subdirectories reside in the following Windows directory:
C:\Program Files\Java
If you are using SAS in a 64-bit Windows operating environment, check to see which subdirectories reside in the following Windows directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java
With the directories above, you should see subdirectory names such as jre1.6.0_24, jre6, jre7, and so on.
- For each subdirectory that exists, open the corresponding bin directory, such as:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin
- Search each of the Java bin directories on your Windows machine for the following file:
Once you locate the Java directory where jabswitch.exe resides, write down the name of this directory.
- Open a DOS command prompt or DOS command window. From the DOS command prompt, make sure that you see:
C:\
- Enter the following DOS command:
cd Program Files (x86)\Java\java-subdirectory\bin
Be sure to replace java-subdirectory above with the name of the Java subdirectory on your Windows machine where the jabswitch.exe file resides.
- Enter the following DOS command:
jabswitch -disable
- Restart SAS. The error messages should no longer appear in the SAS log.
An alternative solution is to issue two commands from a DOS command prompt or DOS command window that will execute the jabswitch -disable command for all instances of jabswitch.exe that are installed on your Windows machine. To do this, follow these steps:
- Enter the following DOS command from a DOS command prompt or DOS command window:
cd /d c:\
- Enter the following DOS command:
for /F "delims=" %i IN ('dir /s/b jabswitch.exe') do "%i" -disable
- Restart SAS.
