The following error might be generated by the SGPLOT or SGPANEL procedure:

ERROR 22-322: Expecting a quoted string.
ERROR 76-322: Syntax error, statement will be ignored.

The problem occurs when both of the following are true:

• An XAXIS or YAXIS statement in PROC SGPLOT or a COLAXIS or ROWAXIS statement in PROC SGPANEL includes a VALUES= option that references numeric values.
• The TYPE=DISCRETE option is specified.

Note that some types of plots, such as bar charts, automatically generate a discrete axis.

Prior to SAS^® 9.4, the VALUES= option was ignored when the axis type was discrete, so the option appeared to work.

To prevent the error, each value that is listed in the VALUES= option must be enclosed in quotation marks and separated from adjacent values by a blank space in an XAXIS or YAXIS statement in PROC SGPLOT or a COLAXIS or ROWAXIS statement in PROC SGPANEL.

Beginning with the second maintenance release of SAS 9.4 (TS1M2), numeric values can be listed as a range of values.
