Installation Note 52654: Using the SAS® Installation Log Assistant to gather SAS® installation logs

The SAS Installation Log Assistant is used in the collection of installation logs for SAS® 9.2, SAS® 9.3, and SAS® 9.4. The utility can also assist in sending the logs to SAS Technical Support. Follow the steps below to collect your logs.


  1. Download the utility from the Downloads tab of this SAS note.

  2. When prompted, click Run to start the utility. If you are using a browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer, you might have to save the file before you can run it.

  4. You might be asked to confirm that you would like to run the executable. Click Run here to confirm.

  6. The SAS Installation Log Assistant appears. On the first page, you are asked which version of SAS you would like to collect logs for. For this demonstration, SAS 9.4 is selected. Note: If a version of SAS is not found on your system, the corresponding button is not selectable. Click the SAS version button and click Next.

  8. A screen appears, listing the log files to be retrieved from your system. Click Next to continue.

  9. The next screen again lists the files. Click Start to begin the collection process.

  11. When the necessary logs are being collected, a small pop-up window titled System Information appears. Do not close this window.

  13. Once the SAS Installation Log Assistant has finished collecting your logs, the screen shows Collection complete. Click Next to continue.

  15. The completion screen appears. Once you arrive on the completion screen, you can view the logs that the SAS Installation Log assistant has gathered by clicking on the blue link. This opens a Windows Explorer window showing you the collected files. If a SAS Technical Support consultant has asked you for the logs, click the Send logs to SAS Technical Support button to upload the collected files to the SAS FTP servers.

  17. When prompted, enter the SAS Technical Support tracking number of your currently open track. This enables the SAS Technical Support consultants to identify your files. Click Next to continue.

  19. For verification, you are asked to enter your SAS Technical Support tracking number again. Do this and click Upload to continue.

  21. The utility then compresses your files into a zip format and uploads them to the SAS FTP server. The size of your files affects how long this might take to complete.

  23. Once the upload process is complete, a prompt shows the name of the file that has been uploaded. Please provide this to your SAS Technical Support consultant.
