Usage Note 49324: SASĀ® Software support of the System z High Performance FICON (zHPF) feature
Note: For more information, see IBM United States Software Announcement 211-252 for z/OS V1R13 (or the corresponding announcement for your geographical region).
Beginning in z/OS V1R13, most of the Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMS) access methods used by SAS Software support the System z High Performance FICON (zHPF)feature. Therefore, the performance benefits of zHPF are available for all supported releases of SAS, assuming the following:
- The customer installation has the appropriate levels of hardware and software, as detailed in the announcement letter
- zHPF is enabled via the ZHPF statement in SYS1.PARMLIB(IECIOSxx)
- zHPF is enabled for the basic access methods (see the SAM_USE_HPF parameter in SYS1.PARMLIB[IGDSMSxx])
However, there are two cases in which the zHPF feature is not used by SAS:
- SAS direct access bound libraries are processed via the Execute Channel Program (EXCP) using standard channel programs that do not take advantage of zHPF. SAS is aware of the requirement to exploit zHPF when accessing these types of libraries, and consideration of this requirement is ongoing.
- SAS libraries that were created using Version 5 reside in DSORG=DA data sets that are accessed via the Basic Direct Access Method (BDAM), for which zHPF support has not been announced.
