Usage Note 45508: SAS® Metadata Server in SAS® 9.3 fails to start if MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml has been moved or deleted
Note: The information in this SAS Note applies only to SAS® 9.3 metadata server environments. For information about resolving this issue for SAS® 9.4 environments, see SAS Note 63028, "SAS® Metadata Server for SAS® 9.4 fails to start and you see an 'Element named MetadataServer is missing from the Backup Manifest' error."
The SAS® Metadata Server fails to start if the MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml has been moved or deleted from its default location of configdir/Lev1/SASMeta/MetadataServer.
When the SAS Metadata Server is started, the file MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml is opened and read. If the file has been moved or deleted, the SAS Metadata Server creates a new file that contains a new, unique GUID. The SAS Metadata server then fails to start because the GUID in MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml does not match the GUID in MetadataServerBackupHistory.xml and MetadataServerBackupConfiguration.xml. The following message is written to the server log:
ERROR:Element named MetadataServerBackupConfiguration is missing from the Backup Manifest.
To avoid this problem, do not delete MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml from the configdir/Lev1/SASMeta/MetadataServer directory and do not move it to a different directory.
To recover from this problem:
Note: Any backups that were taken after the date of the restored MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml will not appear in backup history. However, the backup files can still be accessed if they are needed.
- Remove the following files from Lev1/SASMeta/MetadataServer:
- MetadataServerBackupHistory.xml
- MetadataServerBackupConfiguration.xml
- MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml
- Restore MetadataServerBackupManifest.xml from the most recently available backup that contains the file.
- Start the SAS Metadata Server. The SAS Metadata Server will create new instances of MetadataServerBackupHistory.xml and MetadataServerBackupConfiguration.xml.
- Use SAS® Management Console to run a current backup of the SAS Metadata Server.
The SAS Management Console Backup and Restore Wizards can be accessed on the Plug-ins tab by navigating to:
Environment Management ► Metadata Manager ► Metadata Utilities ► Server Backup.
