Problem Note 44293: Multiple observations might be created when SMF data is processed into the XASMCEL table from multiple logical partitions
When you process System Management Facility (SMF) data from multiple logical partitions (LPARs) into the XASMCEL staged table using SAS® IT Resource Management 3.2, there is potential for multiple observations to be generated.
If you are processing SMF data from multiple LPARs of a full-capacity CPU model machine, there is the potential for multiple observations to be created per interval. Normally, only LPAR would be present. Most of the metrics for those extraneous observations have duplicate values—the most notable exceptions being the MIPS-based computed columns. These values might cause summary statistics for those metrics to be incorrect.
If you are processing SMF data from multiple LPARS of a sub-capacity CPU model or machine, there is the potential to have as many observations as there are LPARs on the same Central Electronic Complex (CEC). Although these duplicate observations contain duplicate values across all metrics, the weighted mean statistics, upon which most reporting is based, should not be affected.
In addition, regardless of the type of machine, it is also possible to lose some observations from tables XASM70L and XASMCEL if the SMF data being processed contains data for LPARs running non-z/OS work (for example, a machine configured to run a coupling facility).
