The maximum length for member captions in a SAS OLAP cube is 256 bytes. For single-byte encodings, this means your captions can have up to 256 characters. When using a double-byte encoding or UTF-8, the maximum characters length depends on the number of bytes the individual characters of your string use.

For example, with UTF-8 encoding most Chinese characters use up to 3 bytes to store. If you have a member caption value that has 10 Chinese characters, it will take up to 30 bytes to store the value.

Therefore, with a 256 maximum length for a member caption, you might be able to store only 85 characters if all of the characters in the string use 3 bytes in UTF-8.

If you need to determine the length of your double-byte character values to see if they will fall within the allowed maximum length, you can verify the byte length using the LENGTH and KLENGTH functions to check the character length.
