Problem Note 43557: SQL range optimization is bypassed for data ordered by formatted values for a SAS® OLAP cube

The SAS OLAP Server has a range optimization that causes certain ROLAP SQL queries to be generated using the BETWEEN operator with beginning and ending values instead of being generated using the IN operator that contains all values in the range.
However, for levels within a SAS OLAP cube that have formats associated with them and that are sorted in either ascending formatted (ASCFORMATTED) or descending formatted (DESFORMATTED) order, the range optimization is bypassed and an IN clause is generated in the SQL. This can potentially result in a very large IN list.
You can circumvent this problem by sorting ascending or descending on the unformatted value.
