Usage Note 42687: Error Allocating CLI Environment and Socket Errors when using the PC File Server
When using the EXCELCS, ACCESSCS or PCFILES engines the following error can occur:
ERROR: Error allocating CLI environment.
In the PCFILESERVER.LOG file located in the SAS working directory, you see the following error:
ERROR: A socket routine returned error: An unexpected error has occurred.
The problem occurs when the SAS version is different from the SAS PC File Server. For example if SAS is running 9.2 TS2M3 and the SAS PC File Server is 9.2 TS2M2.
To resolve the problem do the following:
- You can run %put &sysvlong; in SAS to get the version of SAS that you are running.
- Then make sure the SAS PC File Server matches the version. To check the SAS PC File Server, you can do the following:
- Stop the SAS PC File Server service if it is running as a service.
- Select Start>Programs>SAS>SAS PC File Server to start the PC File Server manually
- Select Help>About SAS PC File Server
- The version should be in the panel that is displayed.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
Connection failed and other errors occur when using the SAS PC File Server. In the PC File Server log it contains socket errors. This cause for the problem is that the SAS and SAS PC File Server must be the same release.
