Starting in SAS 9.2, you can include a semicolon within your explicit pass-through query if your database allows semicolons within the query. However, with this support, SAS is not able to determine the difference between a semicolon that is part of a query and a semicolon that ends a statement. As a result, SAS no longer flags a syntax error if your query is missing a closing parenthesis. This behavior gives the impression that SAS is running as it's waiting for a right parenthesis. The SQL procedure appears to be running in the SAS Program Editor, even though that is not actually the case. SAS is caught in the compile phase, waiting for the end of the statement so it can execute.

When this happens, make sure to include the missing parenthesis.

SAS is unable to detect that there is a missing closing parenthesis for the explicit pass-through query. It will see any subsequent code as part of the pass-through query until it finds a closing parenthesis.
