For releases earlier than SAS^® 9.2, REMOTE engine libraries defined in metadata might need the USER= and PASSWORD= LIBNAME options defined in the library object. This is to allow users to connect to the SAS/SHARE^® server if it is running secured (by using the AUTHENTICATE=REQUIRED option on PROC SERVER).

Beginning with SAS 9.2, this is not required if the user's outbound credentials are stored in metadata via the User Manager. Note that both the user name and password must be stored. Also, the presence of asterisks in the password field of an existing user entry does not mean that the password actually is stored. The blocking out of the password field is done at all times. For example, with outbound credentials stored, users of SAS^® Enterprise Guide^® users can "see" pre-assigned REMOTE engine libraries that they otherwise could not.
