Usage Note 42190: SAS®9 with Asian encoding does not support extended ASCII characters
SAS 9 with Asian encoding does not support extended ASCII characters because the encodings and code pages are all different.
Asian encoding is Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and so on. If you use SAS to open a data set with extended ASCII characters, you get transcoding error similar to the following:
WARNING: Some character data was lost during transcoding in the
dataset xxxx.xxxxxx. Either the data contains characters that are
not representable in the new encoding or truncation occurred during
transcoding.
The encoding of a data set cannot be manually converted to DBCS (double-byte character set)encoding.
To view ASCII data or convert the encoding of ASCII data, the data set must be accessed in either English or Unicode SAS.
