Problem Note 42033: #N/A might show for some cells when opening an OLAP cube through the SASĀ® Add-In for Microsoft Office
When an OLAP cube is opened in the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office, the connection to the SAS® OLAP Server is handed over to a PivotTable object. Version 2.1 opens the cube in the Microsoft Excel 2003 PivotTable object, which has a limit of 255 characters for any member name. (A member name is the identifier for a particular dimension that defines the coordinates for a given cell.) If the member name exceeds the 255 character limit, the string "#N/A" is displayed in the cell. Beginning in the 4.2 release of the SAS Add-in with Microsoft Excel 2007 and later, the updated PivotTable object will be used. This object has a limit of 32767 characters and is much less likely to encounter the issue. Users running previous versions of Microsoft Excel will continue to encounter the 255 character limit even with the updated version of the SAS Add-in.
An example of a member name that would cause this issue is:
[Retail Groups].[Retail Groups].[All Retail Groups].[Clothing and Shoes].
[Casual Clothing Styles].[10234 Men's].[10234-5522 Men's Pants and Shorts].
[10234-5522-A Men's Denim Jeans].[10234-5522-A Men's Denim Blue Jeans].[Boot Cut].
[32 Length].[32 Waist].[Button Fly]
If you are using Microsoft Excel 2007 or later, you can workaround the issue by opening the cube through Excel's Data menu. Alternatively, you can contact your SAS Software Representative to inquire about upgrading to the latest version of the SAS Add-in for Microsoft Office. Instructions on how to connect to a SAS 9.2 OLAP Server from Microsoft Excel 2010 are available in SAS Note 42034.
