Beginning in SAS^® 9.2, the SAS email time-out is 30 seconds. If SAS does not receive a response from the SMTP server within 30 seconds, the email is not sent, and one of these errors is written to the SAS log:

ERROR: Email: The specified address is not available.   
 
ERROR: Email server did not respond.

ERROR: Email service not available. 

You can either implement the workaround shown below or download the hot fix.

To circumvent this problem: If your SMTP server supports the parameter MaxAcknowledgementDelay, decrease the value of this parameter to 30 seconds or less. If you cannot change this value, or if your SMTP server does not support it, please contact SAS Technical Support to discuss alternatives.

To use the hot fix: Click the Hot Fix tab at the top of this note to access the hot fix. This hot fix increases the email time-out to 120 seconds.

Beginning in SAS^® 9.4, a new SAS system option, EMAILACKWAIT is available to control the SAS email time-out.
