Character data types with zero length in DB2 are assigned a length of 32767 when read into SAS, with the SAS/ACCESS Interface to DB2 9.2 software.

The SQL LENGTH column modifier can be used to change the default length assigned by SAS/ACCESS Interface to DB2.

The following example is when using a LIBNAME statement to DB2.

   PROC SQL;
     SELECT ZeroLengthColumn LENGTH=32 FORMAT=$32. INFORMAT=$32. 
   FROM db2lib.table;
   QUIT;

This example is when using pass-through code to DB2.

  PROC SQL;  
  CONNECT TO DB2(Connection parameters);
  SELECT ZeroLengthColumn LENGTH=32 FORMAT=$32. INFORMAT=$32. 
    FROM CONNECTION TO DB2 (SELECT ZeroLengthColumn FROM TABLE);
  QUIT;
