Problem Note 40905: Inline style functions SUPER and SUB are not valid in ODS GRAPHICS output
The inline style functions SUPER and SUB are used to superscript and subscript values in non-Listing ODS destinations such as HTML, RTF, and PDF. These inline style functions are not valid for use in the images created by SAS/GRAPH or ODS GRAPHICS. SAS/GRAPH output using the GCHART, GMAP, GPLOT, or GBARLINE procedure will show the output as the literal string. For example, the inline style function:
^{super 3} will display as:
^{super 3} in the SAS/GRAPH image.
Output created with the SGPLOT, SGRENDER, SGPANEL, or SGSCATTER procedure, or with ODS GRAPHICS will generate the following note in the SAS Log:
Note: SUPER function not defined in this tagset.
Note: SUB function not defined in this tagset.
The ODS Graphics workaround is to use the unicode equivalent. For example, the unicode value:
^{unicode '00b3'x})
Can be used instead of:
^{super 3}
This logic is discussed in the following SAS Notes: SAS Note 39636 and SAS Note 39267.
Alternatively, if output is routed to HTML or to RTF, and the SUPER or SUB inline style functions are needed in the SAS title or footnote, the NOGTITLE and/or NOGFOOTNOTE options on the ODS HTML or ODS RTF statements will take the titles (or footnotes if NOGFOOTNOTE is used) out of the image. For example:
ods escapechar="^";
ods rtf file="file.rtf" nogtitle;
title "Really Super^{super 3}";
