When using Cell Data Access (CDA) tables in SAS Financial Management, it is important to remember that CDA tables are static in terms of metadata updates. What that means is that any changes to the data values will be reflected in your CDA report, but changes to the metadata (for example, changes to dimension memebers and hierarchies) will not be reflected in an existing CDA report.

As a result, you might encounter a situation similar to the following:

• You create a CDA report with Account members on the rows and you select a parent account (such as Operating Expenses) and its' children to display on the rows of the report. At the time the report is created, Operating Expenses has the children Rent and Utilities. When the report is created, the rows of the report display (total) Operating Expenses, Rent Expense and Utilties Expense. The amount in Operating Expenses is equal to the sum of Rent Expense and Utilties Expense
• After the report is created, you might go back to the Account dimension in SAS Financial Management Studio and add another member (such as Property Taxes) as a child of Operating Expenses. Because CDA reports are static in terms of metadata, the change to the account dimension members is not reflected in your CDA report. However, since CDA reports are dynamic in terms of data updates, any data values associated with the Property Taxes account do roll up to the total for Operating Expenses.
• As an example, assume that your intial hierarchy for Operating Expenses resmbles the following:
  

  Operating Expenses
     Rent
     Utilities
  

  and the amounts for each account are:
  Rent 100
  Utilities 200,
  which totals to 300 for the Operating Expenses parent member.
• Now, assume a new member, "Property Taxes" is added to the account dimension as a child of Operating Expneses, and the value in the current period for Property Taxes is 300. When you refresh (or refresh all) your existing CDA report, the updates to the metadata (that, is the change to the account dimension members) is not captured, so the Property Taxes account will not be displayed on your CDA report. However, the change to the data is reflected. So the result is a report with entries that resemble:
  

  Operating Expenses   600
     Rent              100
     Utilities         200
  

  So, while it may appear that your report is out of balance, please be aware that the visual discrepancy between the total Operating Expenses and the sum of the child accounts is a result of the new account not being displayed in your CDA report due to the CDA report being static in terms of metadata updates.
