When you are using the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office 4.2 or 4.3, the following error might occur:
Unable to load the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office.
This error might occur because the incorrect version of the .Net Framework is being loaded.
This can occur when there is a configuration file that instructs the Microsoft Office
application to use a specific version of the framework.
Other possible errors might include the following:
Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
It is important to note that the above errors might or might not occur as there could be other varying unexplainable symptoms. A common symptom would be a SAS menu with grayed out selections or the selections are inoperable.
This problem is most likely caused by a Microsoft patch that instructs the .Net Framework to use a version of the .Net Framework that is not compatible with the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office 4.2 or 4.3.
This problem might also occur if there are configuration files already in place that are instructing the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office to use a .Net Framework version that does not meet the product system requirements. In this case, the existing configuration files could be removed or they could be updated as explained in the next section.
To correct the problem, use configuration files that instruct Excel or Word to use a compatible .Net Framework version for the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office. The configuration files, named excel_SN40066.exe.config and winword_SN40066.exe.config, are available for download from this link.
Important Information
When you download the configuration files from the link above, use .config Document or All Files in the Save as type field.
You must rename these files to excel.exe.config and winword.exe.config. In your Microsoft Office installation location, place the excel.exe.config file where Excel.exe resides, and place the winword.exe.config file where Winword.exe resides. Then restart Excel or Word.
This problem occurs not only from a Microsoft patch, but from the installation of another application that is adding a registry entry. Using the configuration files as instructed in this SAS note should correct the problem.
With these configuration files in place, the problem should not occur again, even with subsequent Microsoft patches or software applications that cause the behavior.
Caveat
Consideration for using the configuration files is important with respect to future SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office releases. If a future release of the software has a baseline minimum of a .Net Framework version that is greater than the version for the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office 4.2 or 4.3, the configuration files could cause a problem. In that case, remove the configuration files.
