Usage Note 40228: "Volatile ACE DSN" errors occur when you import Microsot Excel files using the EXCELCS engine or PCFILES engine
When you use the SAS PC Files Server or you use a LIBNAME statement with the EXCELCS or PCFILES engine to import a Microsoft Excel file, you might receive the following message:
ERROR: CLI error trying to establish connection:
[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] General error Unable to open registry key
Temporary (volatile) Ace DSN for process 0x490 Thread 0xbbc DBC 0x3bb7fdc Excel'.
ERROR: Error in the LIBNAME statement.
This problem occurs for several reasons, including not having permissions on an ODBC registry key. In such a case, change the permissions on the registry key as follows:
- Start the registry editor using the regedit command: select Start ► Run and enter regedit.
- If your SAS PC Files Server is on a 64-bit machine, expand the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ► SOFTWARE ► WOW6432NODE ► ODBC.
If your SAS PC Files Server is on a 32-bit machine, expand the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ► SOFTWARE ► ODBC.
- Right-click the ODBC folder and select Permissions.
- Make sure that the logon ID that is running the SAS process has full control.
The problem might also occur due to older ODBC drivers from Microsoft, particularly from Office 2007. To install the newer ODBC drivers, go to Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable.
If you have 32-bit Microsoft Office, download the AccessDatabaseEngine.exe file. Download the other ODBC driver only if you have 64-bit version of Microsoft Office.
The problem can also occur when an Excel workbook has sheets that contain links to data that are no longer available. To test for this, copy the data from the existing Excel workbook to a new Excel workbook. Then attempt to import the new workbook data.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
When you read Excel files that have links that are not available, volatile errors can occur in the ODBC driver that the EXCELCS engine uses. The problem can also be a registry key permissions issue. Both causes are documented in this usage note.
