Usage Note 4720: How the CPORT and CIMPORT procedures handle compression of datasets
Beginning with SAS® 8, the compression attribute of a data set is preserved when a transport file is created with the CPORT procedure. By default, PROC CIMPORT will produce compressed data sets if the PROC CPORT file was created with compressed data sets.
PROC CIMPORT maintains the compression information and recreates the data set using this information. If SAS 8 is used to create the transport file, then PROC CIMPORT in SAS 8 or SAS 9 will maintain the compression.
SAS® Version 6 did not make the compression information a part of the transport file. This means that recreating the data set with PROC CIMPORT in SAS 8 will create a data set without compression if the transport file was created with SAS Version 6. It can only maintain whatever attribute information is provided by the transport file.
Note: Beginning with SAS® 9.4, a new COMPRESS= option was added to the PROC CIMPORT statement to enable you to specify compression independently of the CPORT operation. Compression can be specified for the target library using PROC CIMPORT. Values are COMPRESS= NO|YES|CHAR|BINARY.
