By design, when a variable is named in a PUT statement using a list-style PUT statement, its values are written without leading blanks. Even when a variable has previously been assigned the $CHARw. format, values written with the list-style PUT statement are left-justified.

In order to preserve leading blanks, use either a formatted-style PUT statement listing the $CHARw. format following the variable name, or assign the $CHARw. format to the variable with a FORMAT statement before coding a column-style PUT statement.
