Problem Note 39986: Disconnections or slow performance might occur if Large Send Offload (LSO) is enabled when using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
When using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), extremely slow performance or frequent disconnections might occur if the Large Send Offload (LSO) feature is enabled on Broadcom's NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet Controller and Intel's e1000 network adapter.
LSO is a feature provided by Broadcom network adapters. This feature prevents an upper-level protocol such as TCP from breaking a large data packet into a series of smaller packets with headers appended to them. When LSO is disabled, if the protocol stack generates a single header for a data packet as large as 64 KB, the adapter hardware breaks the data buffer into appropriately-sized Ethernet frames with the correctly sequenced header (based on the single header originally provided).
To disable LSO, perform the following steps:
- Click Start ► Control Panel ► Network and Sharing Center ► Change Adapter Settings.
- Right-click each Local Area Connection (sometimes referred to as a Network Interface Card), and select
Properties.
- In the NIC Properties window, click Configure.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down to IPv4 Large Send Offload, or Large Send Offload v2 (IPV4), and highlight the item.
- On the right portion of the display, select Disabled.
- Click OK.
Note: Network activity might be interrupted for a brief time. In most cases it is not necessary to restart your system.
Note: This note applies specifically to Windows 7 and editions of Windows Server 2008.
