Usage Note 39700: Errors occur when you export data to Microsoft Excel .xlsx files that contain linked charts
When you export data to Microsoft Excel .xlsx files and you use the EXCEL engine in SAS® 9.2 (TS2M0) or later, the following errors can occur:
ERROR: Connect: External table is not in the expected format.
ERROR: Error in the LIBNAME statement.
These errors occur when you export data to a sheet that has a Microsoft chart in a different sheet, and that chart is linked to the data that you are attempting to replace in the existing sheet. Normally, you move a chart in Excel by selecting and right-clicking the chart object, and selecting Move Chart ► New Sheet.
This issue occurs because of a problem in the Microsoft Access Connectivity Engine (ACE) engine and the structure of the .xlsx file. You receive the same error if you attempt to access the workbook in Microsoft Access.
To circumvent the problem, do one of the following:
- Move the chart object to a regular sheet rather than a chart sheet.
- Save the file as an .xls file rather than an .xlsx file.
