Usage Note 39873: Enabling the Telnet Client in the Microsoft Windows Operating Systems
Telnet servers are rarely used these days because of security concerns and the advent of better remote-connection tools (for example, SSH, RDT, and VPN). As a result, the built-in Telnet clients are often disabled or hidden. However, a Telnet client can be used for other tasks, as well, such as checking network paths from one computer to another via a specific port.
For example, to determine whether the metadata server on a machine (named frogger for this example) is blocked by a firewall, you submit the following telnet command:
telnet frogger 8561
The response to this command tells you whether your machine can connect to frogger on that port.
Although many editions of Microsoft Windows ship with Telnet disabled, you can enable the Telnet client manually. The following instructions show how to enable the client for the Windows 7 environment. Instructions for other Microsoft environments are similar.
- Open your Windows Control Panel window and select Programs, as shown in the following display:

- In the Programs and Features category, select Turn Windows features on or off.

- In the Windows Features dialog box, scroll through the features list and select Telnet Client.

A status bar appears as Windows enables this feature.

- When the update is complete, you can use the Telnet client from a command line.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
Newer versions of Microsoft Windows (Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and Windows 7) do not have the Telnet Client enabled by default.
