Problem Note 38534: An error occurs and the PostgreSQL database management system cannot be invoked cannot when you delete files from the \pgsql\postgresql-8.0.3\data\pg_clog directory
If you delete a file from the \pgsql\postgresql-8.0.3\data\pg_clog directory, the PostgreSQL DBMS cannot be started. An error similar to the following appears in the postgresql-<date>.log file that resides in pgsql\postgresql-8.0.3\data\pg_log\:
ERROR: could not access status of transaction 1553296002
DETAIL: could not open file "pg_clog/05C9
If you have a backup of the PostgreSQL directory that contains the deleted file, you can resolve this issue by copying the deleted file back into the directory. Then, you should be able to restart PostgreSQL.
If you do not have a backup of the PostgreSQL directory that contains the deleted file:
- Make a copy of an existing file from the \pgsql\postgresql-8.0.3\data\pg_clog directory.
- Rename the file with the name of the deleted file. The name of that file is listed in the log message. For example, in the error message above, the filename is 05C9.
- Restart PostgreSQL.
