Usage Note 37566: An error occurs when you export data to Microsoft Excel with the EXPORT procedure

When you export data to Microsoft Excel with PROC EXPORT, you can receive the following error:
ERROR: Open table: Unable to open rowset WARNING: Table _IMEX_."tablename$" has not been dropped. ERROR: There was a problem removing the original table (tablename). See Log for details.
The problem can occur when the previous procedure has not completed before PROC EXPORT executes. For example, suppose that you submit the following program:
proc summary data=merger sum;
by company_cd strata;
var avg_summer_kwh;
output out=outstats sum=;
proc export data=outstats outfile="your-file.xls"
dbms=excel replace;
sheet='your-sheet';
run;
To circumvent the problem, you must add a RUN and a QUIT statement before the PROC EXPORT statement to stop the SUMMARY procedure before PROC EXPORT is executed, as shown in this example:
proc summary data=merger sum;
by company_cd strata;
var avg_summer_kwh;
output out=outstats sum=;
run;
quit;
proc export data=outstats outfile="your-file.xls"
dbms=excel replace;
sheet='your-sheet';
run;
