Installation Note 37119: Archiving your SAS® Software Depot onto tape for future use
When you apply maintenance or add new products to your existing SAS® 9.2 or later installation, the installation process requires your SAS Software Depot to contain all SAS software that is installed to date. If you do not have your original depot and you plan to receive additional products or maintenance by electronic download in the future, you would thus have to download everything UNIX
that was in your original depot, plus the new software and maintenance.
To avoid the extensive download time that would be necessary to accomplish this, you might find it more convenient to archive your depot to tape and then restore it when you need to download maintenance or additional products.
The Downloads tab in this note contains two sample jobs that you can modify to archive and restore your SAS Software Depot:
- backup_jcl.txt. This file contains a sample job that is used to copy the entire SAS Software Depot to a tape unit.
- restore_jcl.txt. This file contains a sample job that is used to copy the archived depot back to a file system directory. Note that this UNIX file system might need to be larger than the original software depot if you are adding products or applying maintenance.
Your Software Order E-mail specifies the size that is required for the depot.
Both files contain comments that describe how to use the jobs.
Any lines containing fields that you need to modify for your site are marked
with the characters <==.
Notes
- These files are samples only—your installation might have site-specific rules that require you to modify lines in addition to those flagged in the sample job files.
- If you edit the file in the SPF editor, use the CAPS OFF command in order to preserve the case of UNIX file system pathnames.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
When you apply maintenance or add new products to your existing SAS® 9.2 or 9.3 installation, the installation process requires your SAS Software Depot to contain all software that is installed to date. Having a backup copy of the depot saves time when you download maintenance or new software.
