Problem Note 37612: The SASĀ® System can only import and export 255 variables when you access a Microsoft Excel 2007 file
SAS can only import and export 255 variables when you access an Excel 2007 file.
The problem occurs because the Microsoft Access Connectivity Engine that SAS uses to read these files can only use 255 variables at a time.
To circumvent this problem when you import a file, you can save the Excel file as a text file and import it into SAS.
When you export, split the variables across multiple sheets in the same workbook with the Variable255 program, which is available from the Full Code tab in SAS Sample 36904, "Exporting more than 255 variables from the SAS® System to a Microsoft Excel workbook".

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
SAS can only import the first 255 variables with the IMPORT procedure and can export only 255 variables with the EXPORT procedure when you access Excel 2007 files. This problem occurs because of limits with the Microsoft Access Connectivity Engine (ACE).
