Installation Note 36685: Rights needed for using the SAS® Download Manager to perform Electronic Software Download or write from SAS media to SAS Software Depot
You do NOT need administrative privileges to create a SAS Software Depot via download or SAS media
to the default SAS Software Depot location (C:\SAS Software Depot).
You do need write and delete privileges when you use the SAS Download Manager to perform electronic
software download or to write from SAS media to a SAS Software Depot on a machine installed in the
Windows operating environment:
- Write privileges are required to copy SAS installation folders and files to your computer.
- Delete privileges are required during the building of the depot after download to delete the
Download directory that is created during Electronic Software Download and the Staging directory that is created during writing from SAS media.
If you choose to place the depot within
C:\Program Files, you need local administrative privileges.
Note that Windows File Protection or Windows Resource Protection could deny the ability to
create the depot properly within
C:\Program Files.
For more information abut Windows File Protection for earlier Windows operating systems such as XP,
see Description of the Windows File Protection feature.
For more about Windows Resource Protection for Vista,
see About Windows Resource Protection.
Note: Placing the depot within
C:\Program Files
is not recommended nor is it best practice.
If the following error message appears in the resulting sdw.log when creating a SAS Software Depot
during download via Electronic Software Download or resulting copy from SAS media to a
directory beneath the C:\Program Files
folder, you need to inspect the location where you are placing your depot for write privileges or
investigate any configurations of Windows File Protection or Windows Resource Protection:
Access is denied
