Overview

In SAS Web Report Studio, one of the ways to share a report is to publish it to a publication channel. SAS Web Report Studio enables you to specify a publication channel when you save, schedule, or distribute a report. If you publish your report to a publication channel, then authorized report consumers can access your report in the SAS^® Information Delivery Portal in these three ways:

• by adding the publication channel to a Collection portlet (as explained in this sample).
• by bookmarking the publication channel and adding it to a Bookmarks portlet (see Create a Bookmark).
• by subscribing to the publication channel and displaying it in a Publication Channel Subscriptions portlet (see Add a Publication Channel Subscriptions Portlet).

This sample explains how to perform the following tasks:

1. create a publication channel
2. save a SAS Web Report Studio report to the channel
3. add the publication channel to a Collection portlet
4. view the published report

Tip: If you have already defined a publication channel, you can skip to the section "Save a report to the publication channel."

Typically, these tasks are performed by three different types of users: an administrator, a report author, and a report consumer. In this sample, the users perform these tasks.

• The administrator uses SAS^® Management Console and the SAS^® Content Server Administration Console to define the channel and set its permissions.
• The report author uses SAS Web Report Studio to save the report to the publication channel.
• The report consumer adds the publication channel to a Collection portlet, and then views content.

Create a new publication channel

1. Log into SAS Management Console with an administrator account such as sasadm@saspw.
2. On the Plug-ins tab, select SAS Management Console ► Environment Management ► Publishing Framework ► Foundation.
3. Beneath Foundation, right-click on Channels and select New Channel.



4. On the first wizard page, enter a name for the channel. In this sample, the name is Sales Reports Channel. Click Next.
5. Click Next again to bypass the second wizard page. You are not going to add subscribers.
6. On the third wizard page, change these settings:
   1. Select WebDAV.
   2. In the Base Path drop-down list, select /SASContentServer/repository/default/sasdav.
   3. In the Relative Path box, enter a name for a subfolder beneath the base path. In this sample, the folder name is Publish.

   

   Note: WebDAV content can be published only to the /SASContentServer/repository/default/sasdav folder, or a folder below the sasdav folder.

7. Click Next, and then Finish.
8. To ensure that only authorized users can publish to the channel, right-click again on the channel name and select Properties.
9. On the Authorization tab, ensure that the user who will publish to this new channel has a grant of ReadMetadata and Write. In this sample, SAS Demo User has those permissions.



10. Click OK to save the permissions and exit the Properties dialog box.
11. Log out of SAS Management Console.

Create the publication subfolder in the SAS Content Server

1. Log into the SAS Content Server Administration Console with an administrator account. The URL should be similar to http://machine.com:8080/SASContentServer/dircontents.jsp.
2. Navigate to the /SASContentServer/repository/default/sasdav base path, and create a folder with the same name that you entered in the Relative Path box when you created the channel. In this sample, the name is Publish. Click Add folder.



3. After the folder is created, click the Permissions icon () to the far right of the folder name.
4. Click Search for Principals.
5. Select the user or group who should be allowed to publish to the channel. In this sample, the user is sasdemo. Click Return when you are finished.



6. Grant the selected user or group the following permissions to the subfolder that you just created: Read, Write, Delete, Inherit Write, and Inherit Delete. In this sample, sasdemo has been granted those permissions.



7. Click Save changes.
8. Log out of the SAS Content Server Administration Console.

Save a report to the publication channel

1. Log on to SAS Web Report Studio and either create a new report or open an existing one. In this sample, sasdemo has logged on.
2. When the report is displayed, select File ► Save As.
3. In the Type drop-down list, select Static report (.pdf format).
4. In the Publication Channel drop-down list, select the channel that you just created. In this sample, the channel is Sales Reports Channel.
5. Enter a description for the report that will be displayed in the SAS Information Delivery Portal.

Tip: You can control the life cycle of a published report by specifying a value in the Days until expiration box. For example, by default the report will be deleted in 90 days.



6. Click Save to save the report to the selected channel.
7. Log out of SAS Web Report Studio.

Add the publication channel to a page

1. Log into to SAS Information Delivery Portal as a typical report consumer.
2. Display a page that includes a Collection portlet, or add a new one. In this sample, the user Sales Rep East (consumer1@saspw) will add the Sales Reports Channel to the My Collection portlet on his home page.
3. Click the Edit Portlet Content icon on the right side of the portlet frame.



4. Click Add Items, and then click the Search tab.
5. Select Publication Channel and enter an applicable keyword. In this sample, sales is the keyword.



6. Click Search to display a list of channels that match your search criteria. In this sample, the Sales Reports Channel is displayed. Select the check box next to the channel name and click Add.



7. Click Done to return to the Edit Portlet Content page.
8. Click OK to return to the starting page.

View the publication channel content

The Collection portlet should now display the name of the publication channel that you selected. In this sample, the channel is Sales Reports Channel.

1. Expand the channel to see the reports that are published to that channel. Notice that the report description is used to identify the report.



2. Click the report link to display a link to the report as a PDF file.



3. Click the link to display the report.
