When you try to use the SSL encryption algorithm with SAS/CONNECT software, you might receive the following error message:

Can't initialize encryption algorithm SSL, exiting.

To use this functionality, you need to apply the SAS/SECURE^TM SSL Add-In for SAS^® 9.1.3, which is available from the Downloads tab in this note.

This problem occurs in SAS 9.2 TS1M0 as well; however, no direct download is available. Instead, contact SAS Technical Support for the appropriate module.

The required module is shipped with SAS 9.2 TS2M0, so if the above message is seen, it is likely due to other factors, such as when the spawner is started with insufficient options to support the SSL encryption algorithm. For example, the message will be generated regardless of release when this command is used:

As long as the modules are available and certificates and such are set up properly, this command will not generate the error:

sastcpd -service unxspawn -netencryptalgorithm ssl 
        -sslcertloc /users/server/certificates/server.pem 
        -sslpvtkeyloc /users/server/certificates/serverkey.pem 
        -sslpvtkeypass starbuck1
