Installation Note 35841: Installing SAS® Foundation 9.2 directly from DVD media
Beginning with the introduction of SAS 9.2 (TS2M0) Revision 09w32, you are no longer required to create a SAS Software Depot from media before you install SAS Foundation.
However, if you have a SAS 9.2 (TS2M0) release earlier than Revision 09w32, it is still necessary to create a SAS Software Depot before you attempt to install SAS Foundation.
A SAS Software Depot is a master directory that contains all the files
that are necessary for installation.
The capability that enables the installation to "span" media does not apply to Planning installations, regardless of the SAS release level.
In order to perform a Planning installation, you must create a SAS Software Depot first, and then install from that depot.
You cannot perform a Planning installation from SAS media or a depot made
by directly copying media.
In earlier releases of SAS, it was desirable to distribute software on hard media formats
because installers were not prepared to manage "disk swapping"
and it was assumed that all the necessary files were in a SAS Software Depot.
As technology and installers have advanced, SAS is moving away from the process of distributing software on any hard media formats.
Electronic Software Delivery, which is a downloaded image from a SAS central server, is the desired method for obtaining your installation kit.
Although you can create media images to burn to DVD and CD from an existing SAS Software Depot, if the depot's size makes it necessary to use more than one disk,
you must create a depot on your PC from the disks before you install SAS.
After installation is complete, you can delete the depot directory to reclaim the disk space.
If using a hard media format is still an option for your installation, consider using one of the following methods instead of creating a SAS Software Depot on your machine:
- dual-layer DVDs, if your depot is less than 8 GB in size
- USB flash drives
- network shares
For releases earlier than SAS 9.2 (TS2M0) 09w32, if you insert the SAS DVD and the installation does not start automatically:
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Go to the DVD drive.
- Examine the drive and look for an icon or any information about starting the installation.
- If no information is there, right-click and select Properties.
Warning: Make sure you are not trying to run this on a CD-ROM drive. If you are, the image cannot be installed.
Notes:
- On Vista operating systems, you might need to right-click the setup.exe file and select Run as Administrator in order to start the installation. If this is the case, click Allow, if prompted, to install the program.
