Problem Note 34916: Software updates might fail and no error messages are displayed when you run the Renew SAS® Software utility in quiet mode
The Renew SAS Software utility for SAS® 9.1, SAS® 9.2, SAS® 9.3, and SAS® 9.4 can run in quiet mode. In order for the utility to run successfully, ensure that the following conditions are met:
- The paths to sas.exe and to the SAS installation data file (SID file) are correct.
- The SID file specifies correctly the operating system, SAS software version, and expiration date.
The quiet mode renewal instructions are in SAS Note 31021, "The Renew SAS® Software utility runs in quiet mode in SAS® 9.1, SAS® 9.2, SAS® 9.3, and SAS® 9.4."
A sample command follows below. Note: The double quotation marks (") are mandatory:
"C:\Program Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sasinst\sasrenew\sasrenew.exe" -s "datafile:c:\sas92_order-number_site-number_host-platform.txt"
"C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASRenewalUtility\9.4\sasrenew.exe" -s "datafile:c:\sas94_order-number_site-number_host-platform.txt"
For SAS® 9.4M3 (TS1M3) or later: "C:\Program Files\SASHome\SASDeploymentManager\9.4\sasdm.exe" -quiet -responsefile "C:\sdwresponse.properties""datafile:c
Note: The spacing must match exactly as noted above. In the first two examples, there is one space before -s.
Note: If you do not reference the correct sas.exe and SID files, then the software license update will be unsuccessful. If the software license update is unsuccessful, a message might appear that indicates a failure. However, in some circumstances, such a message might not appear.
The following problems that are related to the SID file might cause the update to fail:
-
The SID file is for the wrong release of SAS software, or it is for the wrong operating system.
In this situation, the following might occur:
- Files are not updated, including the setinit.log, setinit.sss, and sid.txt files.
- An interactive error message box with incorrect information appears:
The path shown below appears to be a client SAS installation. If you are updating SAS Installation Data for a SAS client, you must enter the location of the SAS client server in the field
Folder where SAS was installed. For more information, refer to the
License Assistance documentation.
- However, if you run the Renew SAS Software interactively by clicking on sasrenew.exe, and you reference the same SID file that contains the wrong release of SAS or the wrong operating system, different results occur. In this case, the setinit.log file updates and a different error message appears.
Resolution
- Use a SID file that references both your current operating system, and the release of SAS software that is installed on your system. Reference the sas.exe file for the correct version of SAS software.
- Check the setinit.log file for a successful update.
-
The quiet command references a nonexistent SID file.
In this situation, the following might occur:
- Dialog boxes do not appear.
- Files such as the setinit.log file are not updated.
Resolution
- Ensure that the path and filename for the SID file are complete and correct.
- Check the setinit.log file for a successful update.
