Usage Note 34248: An error occurs when you start PostgreSQL with the startpgsql.sh script
The following error might occur if you attempt to start PostgreSQL with the startpgsql.sh script:
Could not bind IPv6 socket: Cannot assign requested address
Is another postmaster already running on port 5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry.
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:
- Ensure that no other instance of PostgreSQL is still running. To verify this, you must submit the following commands:
ps -ef | grep post
netstat -an | grep 5432
Both commands should return no results, which indicates that no other instances of
PostgreSQL are running.
- Execute the startpgsql.sh script with an ampersand (&), according to the following example;
./startpgsql.sh &
Although you might still receive the error message above, if you wait 5 seconds and resubmit the ps and netstat commands, you will see that PostgreSQL is listening, which indicates that it has been started successfully.
