Problem Note 33763: Using the CALCULATED keyword in a WHERE clause in a PROC SQL inner join generates a cartesian product

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

In an inner join in the SQL procedure, the use of the CALCULATED keyword in a WHERE clause generates a cartesian product.

This behavior causes performance problems. In such cases, the following note is written to the SAS log:

NOTE: The execution of this query involves performing one or more
Cartesian product joins that can not be optimized.

The following events are also symptoms of this problem:

  • queries that run for extreme periods of time, or queries that do not complete
  • result sets that are much larger than expected
  • errors in creating the results set that occur because of a lack of disk space
