Overview

This sample shows how to insert dynamic text into a Microsoft Word document using SAS Add-in for Microsoft Office with a SAS Stored Process. In this example, three dynamic values (today's date, actual sales, and predicted sales) are inserted into a Microsoft Word document and updated when you refresh the document.

Steps to Create Sample Document

1. Create a SAS stored process. Within the stored process, create title statements for the fields that you want to include in your Word document. In order to get the title statments to output you must also have an output procedure like Proc Print. In the stored process below, a table with a blank values is created. The Proc Print will cause the results to output. Test the code in either SAS Enterprise Guide or Base SAS and then register the stored process in the SAS Management Console.

Open Microsoft Word and type the following two sentences, inserting placeholders for the fields that you want to make dynamic. We will go back and replace the place holders in the next steps.

As of <date here>, The actual sales are <actual sales here>. The predicted value is <predicted sales here>.

 

Somewhere in the document below the text that you entered, run the stored process that you created in Step #1. The results of the stored process will be centered in the document. Select the three title statements and left justify them. Below is a screen show before the titles have been left justified.



 

4. After the titles are left justified, cut (<CTRL x>) and paste (<CTRL v>) each of the title statements in to where you put the placeholders. Note that it will not work if you try to copy and paste the title. You must use the cut option because Bookmarks are saved within the title statement. You will also need to delete the table with the X in it. Below is what the final document should look like:






 

5. Under the SAS Menu, select SAS→Refresh Multiple. This will cause the values in the document to change when the data changes. You can test this further by hard coding values for the title statements into the stored process and then refreshing the document.
