Usage Note 31964: The NAME= option in SAS/GRAPH® 9.2 can be used to create file names up to 256 characters in length
Starting with SAS 9.2, you can use the NAME= option in SAS/GRAPH to create external graph file names that are greater than eight characters in length. With SAS 9.2, the maximum length of the NAME= value is 256 characters.
Note that while you can use the NAME= option to create external graph files names that are greater than eight characters in length, SAS/GRAPH GRSEG entry names are still limited to a maximum of eight characters. NAME= values longer than eight characters will be truncated to eight characters to create the GRSEG entry name.
If you see the following NOTE statement in the SAS Log:
NOTE: Graph's name, XYZ, changed to XYZ1. XYZ is already
used or not a valid SAS name.
This note is referring to the name of the GRSEG entry being written to the graph catalog. It is not referring to the name being used for the graph file written to disk.
You can use a long NAME= value when creating a graphics stream file without ODS, such as:
filename grafout 'c:\temp';
goptions reset=goptions device=png
gsfname=grafout gsfmode=replace;
proc gchart data=sashelp.class;
vbar height / name="longnamevalue";
run;
quit;
You can also use a long NAME= value when creating graph image files with the ODS HTML statement, such as:
filename odsout 'c:\temp';
ods listing close;
ods html path=odsout file='sastest.html';
goptions reset=goptions device=png;
proc gchart data=sashelp.class;
vbar height / name="longnamevalue";
run;
quit;
ods html close;
ods listing;
