Usage Note 31758: SAS/SHARE® server requires the service name to be one to eight characters in length
If you edit the services file on your operating system to define the [official service name],
[port number/protocol name] and [aliases], the SAS/SHARE service name cannot be longer than
eight characters and must meet the following rules:
The rules for the SAS/SHARE service name are:
- The service name can only be one to eight characters in length.
- The first character must be a letter or underscore.
- The remaining seven characters can include letters, digits, underscores, the dollar sign ($), or the at sign (@).
If this is not set up properly, when third-party software tries to connect to SAS/SHARE it is
unsuccessful.
The solution is follow the guidelines listed above.
This does not affect the other SAS services. For example, these scenarios are fine:
# SAS Reserved Ports
#
sasmetadata 8561/tcp # SAS Metadata Server
sasobjspawn 8581/tcp # SAS Object Spawner - Operator
sasobjspawnlb 8571/tcp # SAS Object Spawner - Load Balancing
saswrkspace 8591/tcp # SAS Workspace Server
sasstoredp 8601/tcp # SAS Stored Process Server - Connection
sasstoredplb1 8611/tcp # SAS Stored Process Server -
Load Balancing 1
sasstoredplb2 8621/tcp # SAS Stored Process Server -
Load Balancing 2
sasstoredplb3 8631/tcp # SAS Stored Process Server -
Load Balancing 3
sasconnect 7551/tcp # SAS Connect Server
sasshare 8551/tcp # SAS Share Server
sasremserv 5099/tcp # SAS Remote Services Application
#
# End of SAS services
The SAS/SHARE server is the only service entry with more specific and restrictive naming
requirements.
