Usage Note 30741: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 data types VARCHAR(MAX), VARBINARY(MAX), and NVARCHAR(MAX) cause data truncation when you use SAS/ACCESS® Interface to ODBC
In Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the new data types VARCHAR(MAX), VARBINARY(MAX), and NVARCHAR(MAX) have been added, and these data types cause a problem for SAS/ACCESS Interface to ODBC. The problem is that these new data types are described with a length of 0 and, as a result, the SAS/ACCESS Interface to ODBC engine binds only 1 byte, which results in data truncation.
This problem manifests in the SAS log with a warning similar to the following:
WARNING: During read: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]String data, right truncation :
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]String data, right truncation : [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]String data, right truncation
In SAS 9.2, you only see the standard SAS truncation messages if they are warranted.
Example message:
WARNING: Data too long for column "col2"; truncated to 88 characters to fit.
